Having defeated Midleton on the 19th of January in the sem-final, Youghal completed the job when defeating Cóbh in the final of the 2019 East Cork Junior ''C'' Football Championship at Cóbh on Sunday 26th of January. Both teams played outstanding football and were divided by only one point at the finish. The teams were level at half-time Youghal 0-6 to Cóbh's 1-3, the goal coming from a penalty just before the short whistle. Youghal again forced the pace in the second half but conceded a second goal which brought Cóbh back into the game. The decisive score came about six minutes from the finish when a high ball was fielded by Elton Goggin, who passed to Ken Dempsey, who, in turn, passed to Killian Swayne and Killian finished superbly to the back of the net. Youghal U12 camogie travelled to Dungourney as part of the league missing a few of our older girls our 13 young ladies lined out against a mostly U12 dungourney team they equipped themselves well in the first half and dominated mid field keeping dungourney at bay backs and forwards worked tirelessly throughout the half and Claire marshelled the goal well going in a point down at half time we were hopeful for and equally impressive second half Dungourney made a few positional changes that proved telling in the second half and with no sub to bring on we were under pressure as the girls were working hard all over the pitch
The result didn’t go our way in the end but we were delighted with the display of determination and never ending spirit shown by this ever improving group !! This year we entered a junior lge team to get game time for more players. The team played in Div 4 of the lge and have 3 games left to play. The junior team play in the c grade championship and have their first outing against Glenbower Rovers next Thursday. Like all lower grade competitions in East Cork this year they are all been played on the round Robin format.
With the Cork Senior teams out of competition now it will be all systems go in the next few weeks as the club championship kicks in ,so a busy few weeks ahead. Like our intermediate hurling team, the football league has also concluded with Youghal finishing bottom of DIV 5.
Overall the team have been competitive and lost some of their games narrowly.Sometimes no's were small for games given management no options as they couldn't make changes .It is also hard to get rhythm when you have a different team and no consistency during the league. With the league done and dusted for another year ,it is now time to concentrate on Championship, if we want to prolong our season and progress to the latter rounds like last year. Next round of championship is against Millstreet and will be played on the August weekend. This team are probably the most difficult to organise as with most of the team playing minor, junior and intermediate it's hard to get them together as a unit. This year they will have three games in the championship as it is a round Robin competition. The team played Carrigtwohill in the first round and put in a very gutsy performance. Youghal gave as good as they got and led at half time. The second half was very tight and with 10 mins to go the sides were level.Carrig kicked on in those final mins and ran out winners after a very gallant performance by the Youghal lads.
Fifteen players togged out on the night and hopefully the next night a few more players will be avaliable to give the management some options off the bench.Next game is against Watergrasshill and will be coming up shortly |
