On Sunday September 18th, Youghal Ladies Football club officially launched their club.Over 150 people turned up in Club Aras, Magners Hill, Youghal on the night. Cormac Galvin, club sec, took to the floor first, where he gave a brief history on the club to date, he told how a very successful Gaelic4Girls program started up last September with a result that Youghal had 2 buses full in november going to the national blitz where a great day was had by all. Numbers have since climbed to where they have over 100 girls training every week! To date, our U12s have won the East Cork Plate and our U14s are in the final. The Gaelic4Girls also took park in a national blitz in Croke Park on July 5th and we played host to Sean O'Heslins, Ballinamore from Leitrim in the All Ireland Féile held in Youghal at the end of June. A fantastic weekend was had by all, where friends for life were made!! "Nobody could have prepared us for the amount of support we have received" said Cormac,"the girls, parents and especially mentors have been unbelieveable since this all started, we have a very bright future".
Next up to talk was Catriona Bulman-Hill, chairperson. Catriona told how to date the response to the club has been fantastic, even in these depressing times. She told how the plan to go forward with the club is to have a minor team next year and in 2013 to have an u 16 team to complete the club. Catriona told how last January over 40 girls started training in the cold, wet nights, most of them had never held a football, (some had, however, held the oval ball!!). The girls all grew together through their love of this new found sport. Catriona stresses that they are always looking for new players, "new girls are welcome always" she says, "especially at minor age. We hope to get a strong panel together before next January to start the 2012 season". The club also have a Gaelic4Mothers team. "this is a fun filled training session for women of all ages and fitnesses levels" said Catriona. Its about fun and getting people involved in the club and again is opened to all.
The next thing that was talked about was a fund-raising night coming up on Saturday October 1st, its called " Girls night in....the pub", its a hair and beauty night where you will learn all about how to achieve "the look" in the comfort of your own home. a hairstylist will give a demonstration on all the up to date looks, followed by a make-up demonstration and then we will have our own "Gok" Mrs Avril Geary tellin us "what not to wear", all this is followed by a disco and for the UNBELIEVEABLE price of...E5!! Tickets avaiable from members of the club and on the door on the night. "please please support" she asks.
Catriona finished up by thanking everyone for all the help so far and again asks for any body who would like to get involved in anyway to please come forward, "we are always looking for help with teams, full training will be provided" she says, "without help, this club would not of reached this standard in such a short time!" With every body happy and the photos taken in this fine facility here in Youghal GAA club, we all tucked in to the feast that was provided by membes of the ladies football. A great night was had by all.
