Youghal got their first win in this league campaign courtesy of a comfortable victory against Mallow. Again short a number of regulars, the selectors continued to give valuable experience to a number of younger players, who in turn are measuring up very well to the standard required.
Playing with the wind, Mallow opened brightly with some early points. However, Youghal gradually worked their way into the game & dominated exchanges for long stretches. However, they found scores hard to come by. The scores at half-time were Youghal 0-6 Mallow 0-7. Changes at half-time saw Pa O'Mahony replaced the injured Ed Flavin & Bill Cooper moving to full forward. These moves had the desired effect. Bill had an early close range goal & shortly afterwards Pa set Bill up for another great goal. Youghal continued to hold this lead for the remainder of the half before Brett Maloney raced through for 1-1 in the closing stages to seal the win. A satisfactory result but the performance will need to be stepped up further over the coming weeks when greater tests will await this team. Brendan O'Sullivan had an excellent game at corner back, while the half-back line was very strong all through. Bill Cooper & Brett Maloney got some great scores up front but generally point-scoring from play needs to be improved upon. Very much a game of two halves! With the wind assistance, Lisgoold started very strongly and established an early lead. Only for a great double save by Adrian Curtin, Lisgood could have been well clear after 20 minutes, but a great James O’Mahony goal before half time left everything to be played for.
Slow to settle in the 2nd half, the Youghal lads strugged to make any inroads into the Lisgoold lead. However they finally opened up in the last 10 minutes with a series of great scores to finally settle the issue over a gallant and strong Lisgood outfit. After winning the Inter-Divisional League Final two weeks ago the 2009 Minor Hurling team have go the season off to a great start. Best for Youghal were James O’Mahony, Aaron Kenny & Conor O’Sullivan. Congratulations & Well Done to our Minor Hurling League Winners and to the manager, mentors, trainers & selectors and a special word of the thanks to all the Eochaill supporters. Failure to avail of numerous opportunities for scores ultimately led to defeat in this well contested game. We scored only 3 points in each half and this was not sufficient to secure victory. Nevertheless there was a big improvement in performance from the previous League game and with the necessary training and scoring levels will improve.
On the night Pat Mackey, Paul O’Driscoll, John Grace, Leigh Desmond and Nigel Roche stood out with Nigel and Leigh accounting for 5 points between them.
