While national attention was focused on the All-Ireland Final over the weekend Youghal’s U10 Girls Football team had their own mini-All Ireland in Carrigtwohill on Saturday when they took on St. Nicks in the East Cork League Final. After defeating Watergrasshill on the previous Tuesday in front of a very well supported crowd in Magners Hill the Youghal girls travelled with confidence to take on their city rivals. As the convoy of supporters decked out in the maroon and gold left Youghal, one felt a historic day beginning to unfold.
From the start the Youghal girls quickly set about their business and attacked the St. Nicks goal. Good interchange from our midfielders resulted in an early goal by Caoimhe O’Mahony which settled the team. With the back line marshalled by captain Sorcha Connolly well in control the Youghal girls snuffed out any chance St. Nicks had to get back into the game. A well taken goal by Sarah O’Sullivan mid-way through the first half had the Youghal supporters in full song, with verses of “Lets go Youghal lets go” echoing around the pitch. Further points from Chloe O’Connell and Eabha Walsh saw Youghal lead 2-3 to no score at half time. As expected the St. Nicks girls came out and threw everything they had at the Youghal defence which was capably dealt with by Niamh, Hannah, Jenny, Cara, Cassie, Sorcha and Lesley. With midfielders Kate and Eabha getting on top of their respective players scoring opportunities started to arise for Ciara, Niamh, Chloe, Molly, Caoimhe and Sarah. A further 3 goals in the second half had the Youghal supporters in full voice who rushed onto the field at the final whistle to congratulate all involved on a historic day when the first U10 trophy was brought back to the Club on a scoreline of 5-3 to 1-1. On accepting the trophy captain Sorcha thanked St. Nicks for a great game and wished them all the best in the future. As is custom the convey of supporters headed for town and brought great joy, colour and noise to the main street as they paraded through the town with their well-deserved trophy singing “John is winning matches” a reference to our own Jimmy McGuiness!!. Afterwards all players received goodie bags sponsored by Galvins Cost Cutters (to which we are very grateful) in Club Aras to the strains of Queen’s “We are the Champions”courtesy of our DJ on the day TJ. To our main sponsor Murphy Insurance Youghal the U10 mentors would like to extend their gratitude for supporting the team over the year and we hope you got as much enjoyment from the games as all players, families and friends got. For the record the 2012 panel was made up of 32 players who must be credited with their dedication shown throughout the year by consistently turning up for training every Saturday & Wednesday. The 2012 victorious Youghal Ladies Football U10 panel was Niamh G, Hannah, Jenny, Cara, Cassie, Sorcha, Lesley, Kate, Eabha, Ciara K, Niamh F, Chloe, Molly, Caoimhe O, Sarah, Mary, Amy, Aisling, Emily, Aoibhe, Caoimhe M, Caoimhe S, Leah, Emma, Grainne, Roisin, Tara, Avril, Abby, Catherine, Ciara H, Aobh.

Late points from Kevin O’Sullivan and Brendan Jer O’Sullivan swung this tense Cork IFC quarter-final replay in favour of Adrigole in Carrigadrohid on Saturday. From three previous meetings this season both sides had one victory as well as a draw, reflecting just how evenly matched the teams are. Brendan Jer O’Sullivan spearheaded the assault for the winners, kicking five points from play, with Kevin Goggin and Kevin O’Sullivan also producing fine scores. The pattern for the first half was set inside the opening minute as Brendan O’Sullivan won possession from the throw-in and pumped a long ball toward the Youghal goal. Gerard Green was fouled after winning possession and Kevin O’Sullivan converted the resultant free to open the Adrigole account. Youghal responded through Alan Frahill-O’Connor but their opponents began to take a grip on midfield and Youghal paid the price for poor discipline with Kevin O’Sullivan and Kevin Goggin pointing from frees either side of a brilliant LiamHarrington strike. James O’Mahony looked lively for Youghal who clawed back a score through a Frahill-O’Connor free. Excellent scores in quick succession from Kevin Goggin and Brendan Jer O’Sullivan opened up a five-point lead. Just as Adrigole threatened to pull away Youghal conjured a goal out of nothing. Frahill-O’Connor beat Paul O’Driscoll down the left wing before squaring the ball to Barry Ring, who tapped into the net. Scores from Kevin Goggin and Kevin O’Sullivan were followed by a Frahill-O’Connor free to leave Adrigole 0-9 to 1-4 ahead at half time. Both sides squandered goal chances early in the second half before Brendan Ring reduced the gap to a point on 36 minutes. The East Cork side looked favourites to push on and win when Frahill-O’Connor equalised with quarter-of-an-hour remaining. Having absorbed so much pressure in defence Adrigole edged in front with a brilliant Kevin O’Sullivan strike followed by two sublime Brendan Jer O’Sullivan efforts as Youghal were left scrambling for a late goal which never came. Scorers for Adrigole: BJ O’Sullivan 0-5, K O’Sullivan 0-4 (4f), K Goggin 0-3 (1f), L Harrington 0-1. Youghal travelled to Dublin Hill on the fringes of East Cork, yet still in the heart of the North Side of cork city to play Delaney's in the quarter final of U12 East Cork Championship. On a lovely evening with a good travelling crowd and a very welcoming crowd from Delaneys the match got off to a great start for Youghal . Some great scores from our inside forward line put us ahead and this was the theme for the evening with Youghal winning out comfortably. Every player contributed to the score line and the bench was called upon where many players got a run out. The backline were never really tested in this match but a stronger test awaits against the plate Finalist's runners up Cloyne. All players are fully aware of the challenge ahead especially when both sides met in the Plate Final this spring . A big thank you to all parents that travelled and assisted in car pooling. The assistance on the line from members and Delaney's for the hospitality they showed to us on the evening.
Unfortunately our U12 championship venture ended on Saturday going down to a stronger Cloyne team on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-3. Our U10s finished off their league campaign recently with 2 wins over city teams Mayfield and St. Nicks. We now await the draw for the league semi-finals which should be scheduled over the next week or 2. In addition to the league semi-final we will also take part in 2 blitz over the coming weekends, Ballyphehane on Sept 15th and Passage on Sept 22nd.
