By Derek Kiely Cork County U21A Football Quarter Final
Beara 0-14 Youghal 0-07 In Macroom BEARA eased into the semi final of the Cork County under 21A football championship with a controlled victory over Youghal in Macroom last Saturday evening, where the 'Divisional' side made significant starts to both halves, leaving the East Cork champions chasing the match from the throw in. The Beara team were deserved winners of this match with impressive scoring, especially from their full forward from Castletownbere Deane Murphy who bagged eight points over the 60 minutes. Beara made a tremendous start to the match with a score just 28 seconds in, off the boot of Murphy. From the resulting kick out Beara struck again, this time it was Hugh Sullivan from Garnish who struck one over. Beara held a siege on the Youghal goal over the next three minutes with Sullivan and Murphy adding another three points, all from play and on the six minute mark Beara led by five points. Youghal then got some rhythm to their play and replied with a point from Andrew Curtin from a free and then seconds later Youghal could have had a goal as Dale Donoghue attacked the Beara goal, his powerful shot went narrowly over the bar instead of going into the goal and the deficit was down to three points. Back came Beara with yet another Murphy point as the full forward was impossible to mark in the opening quarter. Curtin struck over another free on the fifteenth minute, but back came Beara again with a well worked move down the right which ended up with Adrigole's Thomas Jo O'Sullivan raising the seventh white flag for Beara. Youghal's David O'Mahony did point for Youghal in first half injury time, but the margin was three points at the short whistle and in tricky conditions this was significant. Beara were brilliant at times and started the second half just like the first with a bag of unanswered points. David Harrington from the Adrigole club landed two from play and Murphy and Kevin Goggin also from the Adrigole club also were on target to give Beara a seven point advantage. It took ten minutes of the second half for Youghal to respond through their best player on the night David Scanlon and this sparked a mini revival from the East Cork men with Bobby Donoghue and Curtin adding scores, but it was short lived as the star of the show Beara's Deane Murphy closed out the match with three more scores, all of the highest quality. This is the Beara divisional sides first match together and if this is anything to go by they will take a bit of beating and they are sure to improve further from the outing, plus they have several players to come back into the team.
