It had been two years since the Youghal side had met Rovers in Championship the last time they met Youghal were clear favourites and won the game at their ease. This year however the Youghal side got off to a bad start with a lot of the girls travelling for college and studying for exams preperation was difficult when it came to the league. Going into Championship they had only gotten one win against a strong Castlelyons side in preperation for the game.
Bride Rovers were the first to get on the score line with a point after less than a minute of play. This was fast responded to by a goal from Ann O'Connell almost imediatly. The first half was fast paced and great entertainment for the supporters with Youghal continuing to score 2 more goals in the first half from Shannen Bulman Joyce. Most of Bride rovers scores in the first half came from Grace Kearney frees. Leah Broderick for Youghal was on top form on the wing and was the driving force among a lot of the Youghal scores in the first half, she also put over a fantastic score to boost the team. Goalkeeper Dawn Kelly was superb in betwen the posts making some fine saves keeping a clean sheet for her team. Going into the break Youghal never felt that they were too far ahead and knew that there would be a battle on their hand for the second half. It was all about defending in the second half, Youghal only wracked up a single point in the second half. Catherine O'Donoghue was moved from her corner back post to mark the brilliant centre forward and it was definatly the game changer, Catherine was unlucky not to score a point from her own 45 when it just dropped short and Samantha Swayne was unfortunate not to get it between the posts. Ashleigh Corcoran was nothing but confident in the final seconds of the game when Bride Rovers were awarded a free that landed in the Youghal square. Ashleigh put her body on the line removing the sliotor from the bunch up and clearing the ball when the final whistle blew. Youghal now progress to play against Courcey Rovers. This game will be a home game and date is to be confirmed Final Score: Youghal 3.04 Bride Rovers 0.11 Team: Dawn Kelly, Catherine Donohue, Ashley Corcoran, Emily Roche, Kerry Hancock, Edel O’Connell, Michaela Dalton, Kelma McCarthy, Allanah Finn, Niamh Crowley (Sam Swayne), Katie Sloane, Leah Broderick (0.1), Roisin O’Keeffe (0.1), Ann O’Connell (2.0), Shannon Bulman-Joyce (1.02) Dungourney were the visiting team on Tuesday 23th July. Dungourney were the first to get on score sheet with a great goal. Then the Youghal girls took over working the ball well up the field resulting in a great point by Shauna O'Connell. Ciara Crowley went on a scoring spree winning the ball well and also being on the end of some great passes scoring a goal and two points leaving a half time score or Dungourney 1-0 Youghal 1-3.
Dungourney started well in the second half scoring a goal and a point, directly after this the ball was worked well up the field resulting in Erin Galvin scoring a lovely point , but Dungourney were not finished and added another point. Then with a few changes on the Youghal team the girls got a new lease of life and in the next few mins Youghal scored 1-3 ( 1-0 Erin Galvin, 0-2 Shauna O'Connell ,0-1 Ciara Crowley),The Youghal keeper Aoife O'Neill and her back line worked hard to keep Dungourney from scoring but in the last few mins the ball went out for 45. With only 2 mins gone, Cassie Irwin O'Brien struck for goal only to be denied by a fine save by the Fr O'Neill's goalie, however it was turned into the net by Abby Crowe who followed up on the breaking ball. Youghal kept on the pressure and where rewarded with further scores from Cassie Irwin O'Brien, Abby Crowe and Chloe O'Connell. The midfield partnership of Hannah O'Keeffe, Emily Gallogley and Flavia Rea battled hard as Fr O'Neill's start to gain some success and tackles were hard but fair. Fr O'Neill's did get into the Youghal back line on occasion but again the Youghal defense of Emma Hickey, Jenny Doyle, Caoimhe Whelan and Kate McCarthy in goals kept the visitors at bay.
Game Two saw practically two new teams for both sides take the pitch. Youghal's back line remained strong with Hannah O'Keeffe in goals, Erin Aherne , Avril Cashman and Amy Whyte holding a strong line of defense. With great support from Caitlin Murphy and Natasha Kilgannon, Cassie Irwin O'Brien managed to carve out two more scores for Youghal. Fr O'Neill's did registered 2.1 in game two with some fine long range efforts. Game Three allowed both teams to make changes at will and give the players experience of the various positions. Some fine defensive displays, with Sarah Kirk in goal denying the Fr O'Neill's forwards. Chloe O'Connell put the game beyond Fr O'Neill's with another well taken goal. Youghal's fine defensive display, meant that they kept a clean sheet in the final game also and ran out winners in what was a thoroughly entertaining match. Many thanks to Fr O'Neill's for traveling and congratulations again to the whole team for their commitment and effort through this game and the season. The next and final match of the group will be against Killeagh (away) on July 30th. We'd really appreciate as much support for the team as possible in their final group match. Coaches: Sharon Murphy / Maurice Delaney / Brendan McCarthy & Philip Cr This pre-championship warm-up game provided the best performance by the team so far this season. The team got off to a great start with two early goals from Shannon Bulman-Joyce, much to the delight of her father who was in attendance! This was followed by some great scores & also by some outstanding defensive work throughout the team which limited Castlelyon’s scoring opportunities.
