Report Courtesy of Irish Examiner (Brendan Larkin) Youghal open the floodgates against Inniscarra
Youghal rippedup the form book at Páirc Ui Rinn on Saturday, crushing the challenge of Inniscarrain an entertaining Premier IHC quarter-final. There was no fluke about Youghal's win which sets up a semi-final spot against Tracton. Hurling with skill and pacethe Seasiders were never headed after Damien Ring tied matters with a point in the second minute. The East Cork side had failed at the first hurle last year after a relay, but regrouped superbly to set themselves up as one of the favourites for this year's title on the evidence of this display. Inniscarra won the toss and elected to play into the wind. It looked the correct decision asthey matched their opponents point for point to be level three times at the end of the opening quarter. However the game took a dramatic turn in the 17th minute when Youghal captain Brendan Coleman picked up an ankle injury and moved to full forward in a swap with Brendan Ring. Ring revelled in the extra space out on the wing and Youghal rattled over five points in a row - three from Ring - and Inniscarra found themselves in serious trouble. Inexplicably Inniscarra's challenge collapsed as the rampant Youghal forwards took control. Worse was to come from the losers when Brendan Coleman set up Ciaran O'Mahoney for a goal which helped his sideto an interval lead of 1-11 to 0-3. Despite losing their captain to that first-half ankle injury, there was no let up in the intensity of Youghal's play on th changeover. They added three more points in a row and with every forward chasing back to help their defence, the Inniscarra attackstrugled to make an impact. Credit also the Youghal defence in which goalkeeper Eoin Coleman, full back John Grace and centre back Leigh Desmond were outstanding. Showing the benefit of former Waterford stalwart Peter Queally's coaching, Youghal led 1-17 to 0-7 at the three-quarter stage and while sheer peristence yielded two Inniscarra goals in quick succession by Dan O'Connel and Jonathon Olden, the Seasiders were never going to lose this one. Those scores were only a temporary blip and James O'Mahoney's goal in the 60th minute put the seal on magnificent all round performance which promises greater things for the Youghal Boys.
