After disappointment in the hurling final at home to Kiltha Óg a few weeks ago, we had the task of going to Dungourney to take them on again, this time in the football final on Saturday, the 24th of October. Even the delay of the ref, and the downpour just as the match was about to begin, the Youghal boys captained by Nathan O’Halloran on the day, were not going to be beaten in another final. From the throw in, all 15 guys got stuck in, and even against the wind and the rain, we got to see some great team play, from Leon in goals, who pulled off a spectacular save, to the forwards who took their scores when possible, to put us in level at half time at 1-3 a piece in poor conditions. The sun decided to come out for the second half, and thankfully it shone on us. Early goals were traded in the second half, and unfortunately the Youghal boys fell behind by 3 points, 2-6 to 2-3 in favour of Kiltha Óg. But that is where it stopped, and in the final 10 minutes of the game, the Youghal boys scored a fantastic 1-9 without reply. Final score – Kiltha Óg 2-6, Youghal 3-12 We got to see some great individual displays, but more importantly a great team display also, and for their efforts they got what they deserved, crowned East Cork football league winners 2015. Nathan gracefully accepted the shield from the East Cork Board representative, Shane Supple on behalf of his team mates, in front of a large delirious crowd from Youghal. Hopefully this will be the beginning of great things for this group of lads. Thanks to Kiltha Óg who put on a feast for us after the match which was much appreciated. We returned to Youghal and all met at Farrell's in Summerfield, and from there paraded the trophy around the streets of Youghal to the delight of the team and to all who were on the streets, and commenced to Club Áras where we got some more team photos. On behalf of myself, Johnny Bulman, Aidan Finn and John Murray, we would like to thank all the parents, for their commitment throughout the year, for driving to matches, supporting, and helping out with whatever duties we asked of them, a big thank you, and to the lads themselves, ye got what ye deserved, a fantastic end to the year, being crowned east cork football league champions. It was Sunday 11th October and our Indian summer weather set the scene in Caherlag for an East Division Hurling Final against traditional Youghal rivals, Tracton. A large contingent of Youghal supporters travelled in anticipation of a battle and, although the end score seemed otherwise, that they got. From the offset, Tracton looked dangerous with some classy midfielders and teak tough defenders but Youghal had our own stars to match and better what Tracton had on offer. Furthermore, side line tactics, introduction of a sweeper and robust support from the Tracton faithful didn’t faze the Youghal lads who went about their business with confidence and discipline. Solid defending by Brian O’Driscoll at full back and Sean O Riordan at centre back gave the necessary platform for many an attack, while Nathan Daly’s goalkeeping was flawless. Tracton's best players were stationed at midfield but with Danny Dorrian (2-6) and Cúlann Geary manning that post for Youghal, the Tracton lads never got a foothold. Up front, Conor O Neill was very solid at centre forward fielding strongly and distributing well while Tracton had no answer for Youghal's Aaron Creamer, Oisin Hill and Cian Coleman’s superior skills in front of the posts. A top notch goal by Devon O’Donoghue before half time epitomized Youghal’s tidy handling and stickwork. By half time Youghal were starting to pull away, and continued to keep their composure all through the second half. When a Tracton player received a red card for a face-guard infringement it looked like Youghal would not be denied their just rewards. Final score Youghal 6-11, Tracton 1-11. A fitting end to a great year for the Youghal u13 lads who, along with the u14s (who did so well in the Féile hurling and football competitions), after the traditional cup tour of the town, enjoyed a celebration at Club Áras hosted by the club and parents. U13 Hurling panel: Nathan Daly, Niall Sheehan, Brian O Driscoll, Evan Villis, Josh Varian, Danny Dorrian, Cúlann Geary, Devon O’Donoghue, Conor O Neill, Cian Coleman, Aaron Creamer, Oisin Hill, Ore Amosu, Micheál Breathnach, Josh Persaud, Shane Morgan, Aaron Fitzgerald, Enda Cronin and Conor Savage.
![]() The Youghal u10A ladies footballers played Inch in the Final of the U10A East Cork Final on October 4th at Magners Hill. Inch started the stronger and it was obvious very early on that we would have a very tough game. It was Inch that had the better of the early exchanges and but for the outstanding defending of Jess Kelly, Eimear O' Regan & Sorcha Kilgannon in the full back line, Youghal would have been overwhelmed. Inch eventually broke the deadlock after 14 minutes with a well taken goal and could have gone further ahead before half time but for a goal line clearance by goalkeeper Ese Ajakari. Youghals midfield pairing of Jane Savage and Alex Cashman were keeping Youghal in touching distance with their tireless running up and down the field. At half time Youghal were lucky to go in only 1 goal down but throughout the year the girls had always shown a never say die attitude and today would be no different. On the restart Jane Savage switched to centre back and Amy O Connell to her usual mid field position. Youghal were now starting to get into their stride, however a long speculative ball in from Inch ended up in the Youghal net and we now found ourselves 2 goals down with 14 mins remaining. Maeve Kelly got us off the mark with a fine point, after some great work by Emma Delaney, with 10 minutes remaining. Millie Lucey and Juliette Nicholson were now well on top in the half back line and Raina Landers and Lorna Cooper were unlucky not to score in the full forward line and were causing a lot of problems for the Inch defense. With 3 minutes remaining Aoibhe Daly received a great ball in from Oufuma Ajakari and finished well to goal leaving only 2 points separating the teams. At this stage the Youghal girls fitness and hunger to win was obvious and the ball wasnt passing our midfield. Everyone pushed up on the Inch Defense and and following a clearance from Inch, Ruby Kennedy won the ball 20 metres out from goal. She looked up, took 4 steps and lobbed the ball over the Inch keeper and into the net. There was only 30 seconds left and fortunately for Youghal , just enough time for the Inch kickout which was defended by our girls. The final whistle resulted in delirious celebration by the Youghal girls and supporters. The final result 2-01 to 2-0. This game was a great advertisement for ladies football and both teams were a credit to their clubs and families.
