By Jim O'Sullivan (Courtesy of www.examiner.ie) sarsfields 0-28 Youghal 0-11
Winning manager Pat Ryan insisted after this trouncing of Youghal in Rostellan yesterday that there has been “no talk” of Sarsfields attempting once more to win back-to-back Cork senior hurling championship titles. But, on this evidence they will be strongly in contention, certainly ahead of a quarter-final clash with either Imokilly or Ballyhea. Youghal did what was expected of them by making an excellent start, but after losing ground approaching half-time, their challenge as good as evaporated in the face of a strengthening Sars onslaught to which Cian McCarthy made a massive contribution with 14 points. The fact that nine came from frees indicated a lack of discipline in Youghal’s play, which “shattered” manager Christy Cooney alluded to afterwards. It was obvious that they needed to be consistent and disciplined in their approach but their failure to do so cost them dearly. Pat Ryan expressed the view that the scoreboard didn’t accurately reflect the way the game was fought out, commenting: “Youghal brought fierce intensity to it for the first 15/20 minutes. We weathered that to get a couple of scores and go in half time three points up. I think that was the winning of the game really. “We are just delighted with the way the lads played — they played some very good hurling and got some very good scores. We gave a debut there to Paul Leopold who was our minor captain last year with the county winning team. He had an excellent game and that’s very good for us going forward. “Cian McCarthy is a great leader of our team, we played him at the edge of the square but you can play him anywhere.” Responding to talk about the retention of the title he had this to say: “To be honest we don’t even talk about that. It doesn’t even come into our reckoning. We’re just going out trying to do our best for Sars hurling club and it’s going well at the moment.” For his part, Christy Cooney was at a loss to explain what went wrong. “We started great and we were four points to no score up and well in control of the game. We gave away too many frees in the first half and we just didn’t turn up in the second half. We were just flat. I don’t know why. Our preparations had gone great, but we just didn’t perform.” Brothers Damien and Brendan Ring accounted for three of Youghal’s opening four points and, with Cork star Bill Cooper influential around the centre of the field, it was notable that they held the lead until the 21st minute when Cian McCarthy’s fourth free levelled scores at 0-6 each. John Grace was excelling at full-back against McCarthy, and Brendan Ring was prominent in the half-forward line, but in the last 10 minutes of the half Youghal were struggling deep in their attack because of the covering of the Sars defence and the fact that Daniel Kearney, with continuous support from Eoin Quigley, had taken over from Cooper in the centre. It was 0-10 to 0-7 at the break and within six minutes of the resumption the lead had been extended to seven points after a score from ex-Cork defender Conor O’Sullivan, who made a big impact at centre-back. The longer the game went on, the more of a grip that Sarsfields exerted and Eanna Martin was outstanding at wing-back. Cian McCarthy’s free-taking from a variety of angles and directions was close to absolute perfection and he was more effective when he roamed from the edge of the square. Youghal continued to put in an admirable effort, but they were fighting a battle that had been lost early in the second half and it showed in the eventual result. Scorers for Sarsfields: C. McCarthy (0-14, 9 frees, 1 ’65); E. O’Sullivan and D. Kearney (0-3 each); G. O’Loughlin and K. Murphy (0-2 each); C. O’Sullivan, R. O’Driscoll, W. Kearney and L. Hackett (0-1 each). Youghal U11’s travelled to play in the annual Ber Ryan Hurling Tournament, which is held in Lismore. They enjoyed 2 great wins in the group stages on scoreline of Youghal 2-5 to Cois Brid 1-2 and Youghal 2-6 to Coshla Gaels 1-2. In the final Youghal met Killeagh and defeated their near rivals by 2-5 to 2-2. The final whistle was met with joyous scenes from players, management and supporters.
This was a great run tournament by Lismore, with Dan Shanahan referring Youghal’s first 2 matches. There was a great turnout by parents and supporters, with food and refreshments provided afterwards by the Lismore GAA club. We would like to thank Lismore GAA club for hosting the tournament and to the Ber Ryan’s family for putting up the Cup and the lovely medals that all the teams received. A fabulous days hurling and well done again to our Under 11’s Team, Managers and Coaches. Fé 14 hurlers travel to Antrim to play in 2015 Feile na nGael
Youghal U14 hurlers set off for the lovely Glens of Antrim on Thursday 18th June 2015 to compete in the prestigious Feile na nGael hurling tournament. Having stayed in Dundalk on Thursday night, the young hurlers finally arrived at their host club, Glenarrife, Co Antrim at 4pm Friday 19th. The hosts treated us to team and sandwiches and cake and also let us use their facilities at their club to loosen up the legs before 2 round robin hurling games that evening. Youghal started the campaign with a win against Cushendall (Antrim) but lost to a very strong team St Earnans (Westmeath) in game 2, indeed this team were to be the eventual winners of the tournament. A huge Youghal support was both audible and visible and that gave the team great heart throughout the opening 2 games. The players were then collected by their host families and enjoyed a welcome rest. Game 3 was played Saturday morning and this was against the host team, Glenarriffe, with the winners getting 2nd place. Glenarriffe prevailed in a ding- dong game and only for a superb save from their keeper at the end, denied Youghal victory. So 3rd place secured and this ensured a Shield semi-final game that Saturday afternoon against O’Donovan Rossa (Antrim). Youghal recaptured their form and some early scores set up a welcome victory. This meant the Youghal convoy would be on the move to Derry in the early morning. Spirits were good on Saturday night, Glenarrif and Youghal clubs dined together after attending Mass and exchanged gifts and glowing tributes to each other. The highlight was each Youghal player individually presenting a sliothar to each Glenarrif Oisins player, which created a bond between the players. Indeed news had just filtered through that Youghal senior hurlers had prevailed against Killeagh in the SHC (there was no reception where we were) and a rendition of “Up the Youghal Boys” was sung with gusto by all. Sunday morning and the trip to the Ownabeg complex in Dungiven, Co Derry, was next, Youghal were first onto the field where they met Dunloy (Antrim) and produced their best display in terms of skill, determination, heart and temperament, a very close game went Youghal’s way, and so qualifying for the Shield Final. Unfortunately, Ballycastle from Antrim were just that bigger and more powerful than Youghal and ran out easy winners, but the Youghal lads were attacking to the very end, indeed if a chance was taken just after scoring their goal mid-way though the second half, then maybe…. The Youghal Fé 14 hurling team travelled to Ballincollig on 18th April for the Feile ‘B’ final against Lisgoold. Youghal won the toss and elected to play into the breeze in the first half. From the throw-in it was evident that both teams were up for it. However, it was apparent that both teams were edgy as it took a while for them to settle. Jake McCarthy opened the scoring for Youghal with a well taken point after 15 minutes. Lisgoold replied with a point 2 minutes later followed by a point from Jake O’Brien and another from full forward Aaron Creamor, leaving the half time score at 0.3 to 0.1. Youghal began the second half playing with the wind with 2 points in succession from Aaron Creamor & Jake O’Brien. However Lisgoold responded and Kelvin Yellop pulled off a great save to deny the blue & gold. But sustained pressure from Lisgoold produced a goal to level affairs. A super point by Danny Dorrian edged Youghal in front but not for long as Lisgoold raised the white flag. Dorrian was now showing what he’s capable of and produced another fine point to put Youghal in front again. Sub, Cian Coleman popped over a lovely score followed by points from Jake O’Brien and Aaron Creamor to leave the final score at 0.11 to 1.3. Team: Kelvin Yellop, Ian Fitzgerald Hehir, Cian O’Sullivan, Brian O’Driscoll, Evan Villis, Ethan Cliffe, Oran Finn, Aidan Kelly, Danny Dorrian, Jake O’Brien, Jake McCarthy, Alan Carter, Culann Geary, Aaron Creamor, Devon O’Donoghue, Niall Sheehan, Joshua Varian, Dean Coleman, Adam Dempsey, Shane Morgan, Cian Coleman Butler, Conor O’Neill, Nathan Daly, Oreoluwa Amosu, Aaron Fitzgerald, Sele Ovianria.

Everyone had a great time and there was a great standard of football played by all. A special thanks to Peter Kirk and Ruairi McMahon who kindly refereed and did a tremendous job. Thanks to the parents that helped out in any way and for providing refreshments to all afterwards
