Healy the hero as Kanturk snatch victory

A goal deep in stoppage time from Mark Healy snatched victory for Kanturk at Fermoy on Saturday.
Four points behind with as many minutes remaining, Kanturk dug deep and kicked a goal and two points in an incredible finish.

Youghal were in pole position after raising their game in the second half. The outstanding James O’Mahony netted five minutes from time and soon as they led 2-7 to 0-9.

But they were caught cold by the late, late Kanturk push and most now prepare for a second round date with Adrigole.

Youghal, playing with the strong wind, led 0-3 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter but points from the outstanding Aidan Walsh, Daithi O’Connor and Joseph Carver left Kanturk 0-4 to 0-3 up at the break.

The restart saw Anthony Nash, Carver and O’Connor all denied goal chances. Kanturk had much of the play, but Youghal regained the lead with a splendid Nigel Roche goal on 38 minutes.

They traded points before sub Ian Walsh and Nash levelled, 0-9 to 1-6. Even though Youghal were battling the elements, the game was still up for grabs. When O’Mahony netted on 55 minutes, the east Cork team were a goal clear and seemingly set for victory when Paul Kelly made it a four point match.

Kanturk clawed it back to two courtesy of Nash and Alan O’Keeffe and with time almost up Healy, a first half sub, was on the hand for the all-important goal.
