Youghal intermediate hurlers continues their 2010 championship campaign with a hard-fought win over Carrigaline at Riverstown on Sunday evening last. This was certainly a game of two halves, with Youghal totally dominant in the opening half but Carrigaline were well on top for most of the second half before Youghal upped their game in the final minutes to extend their winning margin to a flattering 4 pts.
Youghal got into their stride quickly with a flurry of points from all angles. Most of their forwards got in on the scoring which was encouraging, with some great points from Brendan Coleman, Brendan Ring, Andrew Curtin, Ciaran O’Mahony, James O’Mahony & Barry Ring. Carrigaline struggled to make any impression & had few chances to score – some of which they wasted with poor wides. In particular, Leigh Desmond, Damien Ring, Brendan Coleman & Brendan Ring were well on top in the opening half. The half-time score was Youghal 0.12 Carrigaline 0.04. Carrigaline got the opening two points of the second half before Brendan Ring got a point back for Youghal. Carrigaline dominated the next twenty minutes, outscoring Youghal by seven points to one in that period. With Youghal’s lead now reduced to a single point, things were not looking good as the game entered the closing stages. However, the real character of the team shone thru at this stage. In the final three minutes, three long range points were landed by Bill Cooper, James O’Mahony & Damien Ring. While the main objective of the day was achieved, the second half performance needs to be improved before the quarter final in a few weeks time. Youghal Team: Eoin Coleman, Ml Cronin, John Grace, Brendan O’Sullivan, Conor Spillane, Leigh Desmond, Barry Ring, Nigel Roche, Damien Ring, Brendan Ring, Ciaran O’Mahony, Brendan Coleman, Andrew Curtin, Bill Cooper, James O’Mahony.
