oughal played the first of 3 games in a round robin series against Ballincollig last Sunday night in Ballincollig.
On the way to the field it looked like the game would be cancelled as the forcast was horendous, but just before the warm up the sun came out and it was a perfect evening for the game. Conditions were a little slippery and it took both teams a few minutes to settle into the play. The game started off slowly and Ballincollig were the first on the score board scoring from a free. Youghal were given 2 consecutive frees from the 45 but were unable to hold their composure and both went wide. A change of free taker and Edel O'Connell stepped up to the plate and knocked a fine point over from a placed ball. Ballincollig scored another 2 points from frees leaving the score at 0-3 to 0-1 to the Ballincollig team. Shannen Joyce was nest to score for the youghal side sending a great score over from play. Surging runs from Edel O'Connell and Catherine O'Donoghe into the forward line gave the side line something to cheer about, but it was unlucky for Youghal on the night as they hit the cross bar 4 times, 3 in the first half and once in the second. Another 2 frees were awarded and Ballincollig took all their chances sending both points over the bar. Leah Broderick scored a great answering point from play from the half forward line. At half-time the score stood at 0-5 to 0-3 to Ballincollig. there was no lying down at half time and subsitute Siobhan Downing, who is still not back to full fitness with an ankle injury put a fine point over after 1 minute of the second half, but Ballincollig weren't far behind scoring 2 points from frees. The Youghal side were trailing by 3 points but never dropped the heads, they continued to battle hard and a goal always looked inevitable. Great runs again from the half back line that were now conecting well with the half forwards made space for each other. The Youghal tactics were starting to come together and a dangerous ball from the youghal forward line resulted in a quick goal from Kerry Handcock leaving the score level. All was looking well with a minute to go then a free was awarded to ballincollig in their half-forward line resulting in a point for Ballincollig leaving the Ballincollig team victourious at 0-8 to 1-4. The Youghal juniors now take on The Glen on Friday 12th August at the Top field at 7pm please support the girls
