After disappointment in the hurling final at home to Kiltha Óg a few weeks ago, we had the task of going to Dungourney to take them on again, this time in the football final on Saturday, the 24th of October. Even the delay of the ref, and the downpour just as the match was about to begin, the Youghal boys captained by Nathan O’Halloran on the day, were not going to be beaten in another final. From the throw in, all 15 guys got stuck in, and even against the wind and the rain, we got to see some great team play, from Leon in goals, who pulled off a spectacular save, to the forwards who took their scores when possible, to put us in level at half time at 1-3 a piece in poor conditions. The sun decided to come out for the second half, and thankfully it shone on us. Early goals were traded in the second half, and unfortunately the Youghal boys fell behind by 3 points, 2-6 to 2-3 in favour of Kiltha Óg. But that is where it stopped, and in the final 10 minutes of the game, the Youghal boys scored a fantastic 1-9 without reply. Final score – Kiltha Óg 2-6, Youghal 3-12 We got to see some great individual displays, but more importantly a great team display also, and for their efforts they got what they deserved, crowned East Cork football league winners 2015. Nathan gracefully accepted the shield from the East Cork Board representative, Shane Supple on behalf of his team mates, in front of a large delirious crowd from Youghal. Hopefully this will be the beginning of great things for this group of lads. Thanks to Kiltha Óg who put on a feast for us after the match which was much appreciated. We returned to Youghal and all met at Farrell's in Summerfield, and from there paraded the trophy around the streets of Youghal to the delight of the team and to all who were on the streets, and commenced to Club Áras where we got some more team photos. On behalf of myself, Johnny Bulman, Aidan Finn and John Murray, we would like to thank all the parents, for their commitment throughout the year, for driving to matches, supporting, and helping out with whatever duties we asked of them, a big thank you, and to the lads themselves, ye got what ye deserved, a fantastic end to the year, being crowned east cork football league champions. Eochaill Abú….
