The Youghal u10A ladies footballers played Inch in the Final of the U10A East Cork Final on October 4th at Magners Hill. Inch started the stronger and it was obvious very early on that we would have a very tough game. It was Inch that had the better of the early exchanges and but for the outstanding defending of Jess Kelly, Eimear O' Regan & Sorcha Kilgannon in the full back line, Youghal would have been overwhelmed. Inch eventually broke the deadlock after 14 minutes with a well taken goal and could have gone further ahead before half time but for a goal line clearance by goalkeeper Ese Ajakari. Youghals midfield pairing of Jane Savage and Alex Cashman were keeping Youghal in touching distance with their tireless running up and down the field. At half time Youghal were lucky to go in only 1 goal down but throughout the year the girls had always shown a never say die attitude and today would be no different. On the restart Jane Savage switched to centre back and Amy O Connell to her usual mid field position. Youghal were now starting to get into their stride, however a long speculative ball in from Inch ended up in the Youghal net and we now found ourselves 2 goals down with 14 mins remaining. Maeve Kelly got us off the mark with a fine point, after some great work by Emma Delaney, with 10 minutes remaining. Millie Lucey and Juliette Nicholson were now well on top in the half back line and Raina Landers and Lorna Cooper were unlucky not to score in the full forward line and were causing a lot of problems for the Inch defense. With 3 minutes remaining Aoibhe Daly received a great ball in from Oufuma Ajakari and finished well to goal leaving only 2 points separating the teams. At this stage the Youghal girls fitness and hunger to win was obvious and the ball wasnt passing our midfield. Everyone pushed up on the Inch Defense and and following a clearance from Inch, Ruby Kennedy won the ball 20 metres out from goal. She looked up, took 4 steps and lobbed the ball over the Inch keeper and into the net. There was only 30 seconds left and fortunately for Youghal , just enough time for the Inch kickout which was defended by our girls. The final whistle resulted in delirious celebration by the Youghal girls and supporters. The final result 2-01 to 2-0. This game was a great advertisement for ladies football and both teams were a credit to their clubs and families.
